ATM Card vs. Debit Card
✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version
A basic ATM card only allows cash withdrawal and balance checks at ATMs; a debit card does that plus point-of-sale purchases and online payments - most cards issued today are debit cards by default, making the older ATM-only card increasingly rare.
A pure ATM card's function is limited to withdrawing cash and checking balances at an ATM. A debit card does everything an ATM card does, plus lets you pay directly at shops (point-of-sale) and make online purchases, drawing directly from your account balance rather than a credit line. Nearly every card issued by Indian banks today is a debit card by default - a standalone ATM-only card has become uncommon, though the distinction still occasionally causes confusion for older account holders with a legacy card.
