Envelope System

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version The envelope system allocates a fixed amount of cash (or a digital equivalent) to each spending category at the start of the month - once an envelope is empty, spending in that category stops until next month.

Traditionally done with physical cash envelopes labeled "groceries," "entertainment," and so on - when an envelope is empty, that category's spending stops for the month, creating a hard limit rather than a soft guideline. In a UPI-first spending environment, this is usually adapted digitally: separate bank accounts or a budgeting app's category limits stand in for physical envelopes. The core mechanism - a hard stop, not just a tracked total - is what makes it more effective than a simple spending log for people who tend to overspend in specific categories.
