Fixed vs. Variable Expenses

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version Fixed expenses stay the same every month (rent, EMIs, insurance premiums); variable expenses change (groceries, fuel, entertainment) - and only variable expenses give a budget real room to adjust in a tight month.

When income drops unexpectedly or a big goal needs extra funding, fixed expenses (a signed lease, an existing EMI) generally can't be changed quickly, while variable expenses (how much is spent on dining out or shopping this month) can flex immediately. This is why a budget review should separate the two clearly: knowing exactly how much is truly fixed versus how much is actually adjustable tells you, in a real pinch, precisely how much room you have to work with - and how much isn't negotiable in the short term.
