Money Mule

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version A money mule is someone who unknowingly or knowingly allows their bank account to be used to transfer proceeds of fraud - even an unwitting participant can face serious legal consequences, not just the actual scammer.

Fraudsters often route stolen money through intermediary accounts (money mules) to obscure the trail before final withdrawal - sometimes recruiting mules knowingly with a cut of the money, sometimes tricking people into believing they're doing a legitimate favor or part-time job by moving money through their own account. Regardless of intent, an account used this way can face freezing, and the account holder can face genuine legal scrutiny - a strong reason to never let anyone else route money through your bank account, even for someone you know, without being certain of the money's actual source.
