Net Worth

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version Net worth is the total value of everything you own minus everything you owe - the single number that best summarizes your financial position at any point in time.

Net worth = total assets (savings, investments, property, provident fund balance) minus total liabilities (home loan, car loan, credit card debt, any other outstanding balance). Two people earning the exact same salary can have very different net worths depending on how much they've saved versus spent, and how much debt they carry. Unlike income, which measures cash flow in a given month, net worth measures accumulated financial position - which is why it's the number worth tracking once or twice a year to see whether real progress is happening, not just spending happening.
