GLOSSARY

Pre-Existing Disease Clause

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version A pre-existing disease is a condition you already had, or had symptoms of, before buying a policy - covered only after a specific waiting period, and only if honestly disclosed at purchase.

Insurers require disclosing known pre-existing conditions at the time of purchase; the specific waiting period before that condition becomes eligible for a claim (commonly a few years) then applies. The critical detail: non-disclosure - hoping a condition goes unnoticed - can void the entire claim later, even for something unrelated to the undisclosed condition, once the insurer discovers the omission during claim investigation. Honest disclosure at purchase, even if it means a longer initial wait for that specific condition, protects the rest of your coverage.
