Surrender Value

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version Surrender value is the amount you receive if you exit a traditional (savings-linked) life insurance policy before its term ends - typically only a fraction of premiums paid, especially in the earlier policy years.

Unlike a term insurance policy (which has no surrender value, since it's pure protection with no savings component), a traditional/endowment/ULIP policy accumulates a surrender value over time - but exiting in the early years typically returns significantly less than total premiums paid, since a large portion of early premiums covers charges and the insurance cost itself, not the savings component. See our article on term vs. traditional life insurance for why this structure exists and why it's a real cost of exiting these products early.
